Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. I-VI-CXXI

Miserable are philosophers

Miserable are philosophers

When they try to explain to us

What the world is, and why —

And what and how we should think.

For this we have long known,

From the sages of old.

All that is new is that one must

Impart it to new men.

All these little minds are proud

Of their free-thinking comedy;

Each one believes that he alone

Has hit the mark.

But on the Day of Judgment, one will hear:

He know nothing, who knows not God.

Pitoyables sont les philosophes

Pitoyables sont les philosophes

Quand ils veulent nous expliquer

Ce qu’est le monde, et pourquoi —

Ce que et comment nous devons penser.

Car cela, nous le savons déjà depuis longtemps

Par les sages des anciens temps ;

Seul est nouveau que l’on doive

Disposer ce savoir pour un nouveau public.

Tous les petits esprits sont fiers

Des bouffonneries de la pensée libre ;

Chacun pense que lui tout seul

A décroché la timbale.

Entendez au Jour du Jugement :

Qui ne connaît Dieu, ne connaît rien.

Jämmerlich sind Philosophen

Jämmerlich sind Philosophen

Wenn sie uns erklären wollen

Was die Welt ist, und warum —

Was und wie wir denken sollen.

Denn dies wissen wir schon lange

Von den Weisen alter Zeiten;

Neu ist nur, dass man es muss

Neuen Menschen zubereiten.

Stolz sind alle kleinen Geister

Auf des freien Denkens Possen;

Jeder meint, er ganz allein

Hab den Vogel abgeschossen.

Hört am Tage des Gerichts:

Wer nicht Gott kennt, der kennt nichts.
