Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. I-VI-CXXVII

Man can speak, and so make the inward audible;

Man can speak, and so make the inward audible;

He can sing, and so give life to the soul’s music;

He can also whisper, and so veil secrets;

And he can cry out, when threatened by the world —

Let him cry to God in the trials of existence.

If ye understand well the meaning of things:

The first cry of a child is a prayer;

So also is the last rattle before death —

God grant that man inherit the voice of the angels.

But this voice lies not only in a distant becoming —

Calling upon God, ye possess it already on earth.

L’homme sait parler, rendre audible l’intérieur ;

L’homme sait parler, rendre audible l’intérieur ;

Il sait chanter aussi, attiser le son de l’âme ;

Puis il sait chuchoter, voiler chose secrète ;

Le premier cri de l’enfant est prière ;

Der Mensch kann reden, Innres hörbar machen;

Der Mensch kann reden, Innres hörbar machen;

Er kann auch singen, Seelenklang entfachen;

Dann kann er flüstern, Heimliches verschleiern;

Der erste Schrei des Kindes ist Gebet;
