The ball of the sun is a real symbol;

An artificial symbol can be anything.
A true symbol is a proof
Of Reality, in the midst of dream, illusion, and appearance.
But a proof is not the thing in itself;
You must not mistake the sun for the True.
But one may pray to the True through the
It may be that the Heavenly powers will hear.

Une image artificielle peut être n’importe quoi.
Le symbole réel est une preuve
Du Réel dans le rêve, l’illusion, l’apparence.
Mais une preuve n’est point la chose elle-même ;
Vous ne devez pas prendre le soleil pour le Vrai.
On peut certes prier vers le Vrai par l’image —
Les puissances célestes peuvent l’entendre.

Das wirkliche Symbol ist ein Beweis
Des Wirklichen im Traum, im Trug, im Schein.
Doch ein Beweis ist nicht die Sache selbst;
Ihr dürft die Sonne nicht fürs Wahre halten.
Man darf wohl durch das Bild zum Wahren beten —
Es mögen hören himmlische Gewalten.
