Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. VII-XII-CXVI

A friend once visited a monastery of lamas,

A friend once visited a monastery of lamas,

There was a pond with fishes, colored red;

He was told: these formerly were monks —

The pond has inherited their presence.

To be a lama, then to become a fish,

Is not worth the trouble. It is astonishing

How irrational people can be,

Who are seeking liberation here on earth.

Un ami visita un jour un monastère de lamas,

Un ami visita un jour un monastère de lamas,

Il y avait là un étang avec des poissons rouges ;

On lui dit : ceux-ci furent moines auparavant —

L’étang a hérité leur présence.

Être lama pour ensuite devenir poisson

Ne vaut pas la peine. Il est étonnant

Combien les hommes peuvent être irrationnels,

En cherchant la délivrance ici sur terre.

Ein Freund besuchte einst ein Lama-Kloster,

Ein Freund besuchte einst ein Lama-Kloster,

Dort war ein Teich mit Fischen, rot gefärbt;

Man sagte ihm: dies waren früher Mönche —
