Is not yet wisdom; and it will be of no avail

If those who have read about them

Walk not the paths of true wisdom,

However much they seek to rely on their literal expression.

Be noble in thy dealings with noble things —

Thou canst not obtain by force the fruits of the spirit.

Many a fool who lifted a veil

Deceived and poisoned his soul —

Think of the cymbals that tinkle without love.

N’est pas encore Sagesse ; et ce n’est guère utile,

Si ceux qui en ont lu quelque chose,

N’empruntent pas les sentiers de la véritable Sagesse,

Aussi fort se basent-ils sur la littéralité.

Sois noble dans ton rapport avec les nobles choses —

Tu ne saurais extorquer les fruits de l’Esprit.

Combien de sots, ayant soulevé un voile,

N’ont-ils pas trompé et empoisonné leur âme —

Pense à l’airain qui retentit sans amour.

Ist noch nicht Weisheit; und es mag nichts nützen,

Wenn jene, die davon gelesen haben,

Nicht auf der wahren Weisheit Pfade gehen,

So sehr sie sich auch auf den Wortlaut stützen.

Sei edel im Verkehr mit edlen Dingen —

Des Geistes Früchte kannst du nicht erzwingen.

Wie mancher Tor, der einen Schleier lüftet,

Hat seine Seel betrogen und vergiftet —

Denk an die Schellen, die ohn Liebe klingen.
