World Wheel: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Volumes I-III-LXXII
In India, it can happen that a woman
In India, it can happen that a woman
Of the highest caste reveals her breasts;
And that the natural sentiment of the people
Bows reverently before this nakedness.
Westerners, with prudence and piety, want
To cover what could be a temptation;
And, with decorum, to remain at ease.
Ask not, in this matter, what is God’s
For God has willed more than one world.
Each one must follow the law of
You know how to act on your home ground.
Do what, in your land, is pleasing to God;
Not everyone was born on the banks of the Ganges —
And not everyone was born in Rome.
Des castes supérieures montre ses seins ;
Et que le sentiment naturel du peuple
S’incline avec déférence devant la nudité.
Les Occidentaux veulent avec prudence
Et par piété dissimuler ce qui séduit ;
Faites ce qui plaît à Dieu dans votre contrée ;
Der höchsten Kasten ihre Brüste zeigt;
Und dass des Volks natürliches Gefühl
Sich ehrerbietig vor der Nacktheit neigt.
Die Abendländer wollen, was verführt,
Mit Vorsicht und aus Frömmigkeit verhüllen;
Tut, was in eurer Gegend Gott gefällt;
