“The vain chatter of philosophers” —

So said one, king among mystics.

I agree with the ancient philosophers;

A narrow mysticism means little to me —

And even less, a pointless quarrel.

Narrow-minded believers are not sinners,

They may be highly gifted, or like children;

I accept what they understand about God —

Provided they leave the others in peace.

Stigmatisa quelqu’un, roi dans la mystique.

Je donne raison aux anciens philosophes ;

Un mysticisme étroit me dit peu de chose —

Encore moins une vaine logomachie.

Les cœurs étroits dans leur foi ne sont point pécheurs,

Qu’ils soient hautement doués ou tels des enfants ;

Je m’accommode de ce qu’ils saisissent de Dieu —

Pourvu qu’ils laissent les autres en paix.

Mir ist ja recht, was sie von Gott erfassen —

Wenn sie die Anderen in Ruhe lassen.
