Say yes to what is true because it is the truth —
Say yes to what is true because it is the
Not because thou art a prisoner of wishful thinking;
Prejudice in favor of something and against everything
That contradicts it, to the point of persecution mania,
Is, as such, the work of the devil;
On the other hand, it can happen
That a mania shatters a false ideal;
Crusading mania, in an unscrupulous age,
Was compatible with
An enigma before the Face of God.

Le parti-pris pour une affaire
En dépit de tout ce qui la contredit,
Jusqu’à la folie de la persécution, est œuvre diabolique
En soi ; mais d’autre part : il peut arriver
Que la paranoïa brise un faux idéal ;
Le fanatisme des croisés à une époque sans scrupule
Etait bien compatible avec la sainteté —
Un jeu d’énigmes devant la Face de Dieu.

Dass Wahn ein falsches Ideal zerbricht;
Kreuzfahrerwahn in skrupelloser Zeit
War ja vereinbar mit der Heiligkeit —
Ein Rätselspiel vor Gottes Angesicht.
