World Wheel: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Volumes IV-VII-CXXVI

Art should not repeat nature

Art should not repeat nature

Without showing artistry at the same time ;

The work must not resemble Creation too closely,

As if it had stolen its reality.

A work of art must reveal a human hand —

The soul must rise to the realm of symbols;

Only then can art give joy to the spirit.

One speaks of style; by means of this formal discipline

The work is raised above mere appearance —

Style is a God-willed norm.

Sans à la fois montrer le génie artistique ;

L’âme doit se hausser au pays du symbole ;

Ohne zugleich das Künstlertum zu zeigen;

Die Seele muss ins Land des Sinnbilds steigen;
