The saying ora et labora comprises
Everything that is essential in life:
Firstly the meaning of existence, and then
What thou must do in order to earn thy living.
It is often said that work is
Nonsense; if thou couldst make a living
Without work, and devote thyself only to prayer,
Thou wouldst have one foot in eternal life.

La sentence ora et labora renferme
Ce qui est essentiel dans la vie :
D’abord le sens de l’existence, et ensuite
Ce qu’il te faut accomplir pour vivre.
Le travail est prière, a-t-on dit souvent —
Un non-sens ; si sans travail tu avais
Juste de quoi vivre, adonné à la prière :
Tu aurais un pied dans la Vie Eternelle.

Zuerst den Sinn des Daseins, und danach
Was du, zum Leben, zu erfüllen hast.
Arbeit sei Beten, wurde oft gesagt —
Ein Unsinn; wenn du ohne Arbeit könntest
Dein Dasein fristen, dem Gebet ergeben:
Du hättest einen Fuß im Ewgen Leben.
