Adastra and Stella Maris: Poems by Frithjof Schuon-Insight
Would the soul but rest in her own being!
Would the soul but rest in her own being!
Envy, ambition, vanity, and other vices
Disfigure her; she is filled with hypocrisy and
Above all pride; nothing is more hateful to God.
The Evil One may well work many wonders,
Enshroud himself in virtue’s brilliant robe;
Yet one thing he lacks, his mask falls:
Never will he show true humility.
Be on guard, O man, and fear God,
Thou may’t well shine, and lie to the whole world,
And mirror thyself in the pretense of good;
Wake up, thou fool, thou canst not deceive God.
In man there is a fissure, he does not know himself.
O may the soul be reconciled with herself!
Divinity is true, Truth is its being
And It is beautiful; its Essence loveth Beauty.
O, earthly man, thou wishest to be wise;
To hidden things thou wishest to give names.
Wisdom’s beginning is to see
Know thyself! And thou wilt know God.
Se draper dans le chatoyant manteau de la vertu ;
Sois sur tes gardes, ô homme, et crains Dieu ;
Tu peux bien briller, mentir au monde entier
Et te miroiter dans le simulacre du bien ;
Vraie est la Divinité, Vérité est Son Être ;
Et Elle est belle ; Son Essence aime le Beau.
Toi, homme terrestre, tu voudrais être sage ;
Connais-toi ! Et tu connaîtras Dieu.
Wollt doch die Seel in ihrem Sein verharren!
Wollt doch die Seel in ihrem Sein verharren!
Neid, Ehrgeiz, Eitelkeit und andre Laster
Entstellen sie; scheinheiliges Gemüt,
Vor allem Hochmut; nichts ist Gott verhasster.
Der Böse mag wohl viele Wunder wirken,
Sich hüllen in der Tugend schillernd Kleid;
Doch eines fehlt ihm, seine Maske fällt:
Zur wahren Demut ist er nie bereit.
Sei auf der Hut, o Mensch, und fürchte Gott;
Du kannst wohl glänzen, alle Welt belügen
Und dich bespiegeln in des Guten Schein;
Wahr ist die Gottheit, Wahrheit ist ihr Sein;
Du Erdenmensch, du möchtest weise sein;
Erkenne dich! Und du wirst Gott erkennen.
