Here is the eagle, there the little bird;

Lion and eagle did the Lord create in earnest —

The little animals are like His Smile.

There must be all kinds in the world:

Not only the powerful and nobly beautiful,

But also that which speaks of childhood innocence —

So that the Lord might reconcile us with our fear.

Voici l’aigle, voilà le petit oiseau ;

Le lion et l’aigle, le Seigneur les créa avec sérieux —

Les petits animaux pourraient être comme Son Sourire.

Il doit certes y avoir de tout dans le monde :

Non seulement l’austère et noble beauté ;

Aussi ce qui témoigne de l’innocence de l’enfance —

Afin que le Seigneur nous réconcilie avec la crainte.

Hier ist der Adler, dort das Vögelein;

Löwe und Adler schuf der Herr im Ernst —

Die Tierlein mögen wie sein Lächeln sein.

Es muss doch alles geben in der Welt:

Nicht nur das Strenge und erhaben Schöne;

Auch das, was von der Kindheit Unschuld zeugt —

Auf dass der Herr uns mit der Furcht versöhne.
