The Spirit-Wheel: a symbol in the region
The Spirit-Wheel: a symbol in the region
Of the Bighorn Mountains, in Crow country;
A wheel of stones laid out on the grass,
Where once stood a messenger from Heaven.
An image of the Sun Dance: axis, rim;
A magic that lifts up earth to Heaven.
The wise man brought the sacred down to earth,
So that man’s heart could become a sun.

Une roue de pierres, posées dans l’herbe,
Où jadis un messager céleste se tenait en priant.
Une image de la Danse du Soleil : Centre, périphérie ;
Une magie qui élève la terre vers le Ciel.
Le sage apporta le sacré sur la terre,

Der Weise bracht das Heilige zur Erde,
Auf dass des Menschen Herz zur Sonne werde.
