Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. I-VI-CXXII
It is said: wisdom is to know
It is said: wisdom is to know
That the Lord is the Doer. But my doing
Was allotted to me by God, and indeed often
Otherwise I might remain dreaming and doing nothing.
God willed that there be a creature who acts;
Otherwise He would not have made us men.
Certainly, without Him, no action would be
Nevertheless He ordained freedom for us.
Dieu me l’a attribuée, et souvent commandée —
Sinon je pourrais rêvasser dans l’oisiveté.
Dieu voulait qu’il y ait un être qui agisse ;
Jedoch: mein Tun
Hat Gott mir zuerteilt, und oft befohlen —
Sonst dürfte ich im Nichtstun träumend ruhn.
Gott wollte, dass ein Wesen sei, das handle;
Sonst hätte Er uns Menschen nicht gemacht.
Gewiss, ohn Ihn wär keine Handlung möglich —
Die Freiheit jedoch hat Er uns erdacht.
