Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. I-VI-CXXIV
What matters is not — some have said —
What matters is not — some have
That thou lovest God, but rather that God loves thee.
Why so? What God feels is not my concern;
What is needful is that I dominate my inclinations.
Who is it that God loves? I do what I can
And wish to do, for the good. That is what matters.
Comment cela ? Ce que ressent Dieu n’est pas mon affaire ;
Wieso? Was Gott fühlt, ist nicht meine Sach;
Not tut, dass ich beherrsche meine Triebe.
Wen Gott liebt? Ich vollbringe, was ich kann
Und will fürs Gute. Darauf kommt es an.
