Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. I-VI-LXII
What in Sanskrit is called tamas,
What in Sanskrit is called tamas,
In Arabic is called waswas, “whisperer”:
The darkness that men carry within
It cannot be otherwise on this low earth.
The serpent was present in the first Paradise
When our world was in its prime,
And Heaven was still joined to
For to be stained is the price of existence.
But thou art free — may thy heart be the Pilar
On which the immaculate Virgin stands.
Waswas, « insinuateur » appelle-t-on en arabe
Waswas, « insinuateur » appelle-t-on en arabe
Das, was auf Sanskrit Tamas wird genannt:
Die Finsternis, die Menschen in sich tragen —
Es kann nicht anders sein im Erdenland.
Die Schlange war im ersten Paradeis
Als unsre Welt in ihrem Frühling war
Und Himmel sich mit Erde noch verband —
Denn die Befleckung ist des Daseins Preis.
Doch du bist frei — dein Herz sei der Pilar
Auf dem die Unbefleckte Jungfrau stand.
