Autumn Leaves & The Ring-The Mediterranean

God and the heart are center. But the world

God and the heart are center. But the world

Is what outwardly strikes our eye —

Memories, that we carry with us;

Of beautiful places I would like to tell.

The city of Venice, blooming on the sea,

Siena and Florence, merit the honor of remembrance.

San Marco holds the soul in a golden spell —

And Dante’s city, where he began his work.

Then Andalucía: Córdoba, Sevilla —

Madonna processions, lute and dance.

And then Morocco: Fez and Marrakesh —

A world of prayer in the evening-glow of latter times.

Quite another world is Greece:

In the country you feel the free clarity of ancient Hellas,

And then, in gold-laden sanctuaries,

Byzantium’s incense at the threshold of Heaven.

Here Delphi and Eleusis; there Kaisariani

And Mistra. Ancient land of mysteries —

Pythagoras and Plato; then Mount Athos —

Mystical chalice, filled up to the brim

Souvenirs que nous portons en nous-mêmes ;

Tu sens la libre clarté de l’ancienne Hellas ;

Ist was uns außen in die Augen fällt —

Erinnerungen, die wir mit uns tragen;

Fühlst du des alten Hellas freie Helle;

Und dann, in goldbeladnen Heiligtümern,

Byzantions Weihrauch an des Himmels Schwelle.

Hier Delphi und Eleusis; Kaisariani

Und Mistra dort. Altes Mysterienland —

Pythagoras und Plato; dann Berg Athos —

Mystischer Kelch, gefüllt bis an den Rand.
