Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. I-VI-CLXXX

What this earthly life is,

What this earthly life is,

one only knows at the end.

If one lives this life until death,

it is because one must.

Man has no right to be ungrateful —

so many things were beautiful.

But one who has been totally happy —

thou hast never seen.

Ce qu’est cette vie terrestre,

Ce qu’est cette vie terrestre,

on ne le sait qu’à la fin.

Si on la vit jusqu’à la mort,

c’est parce qu’on le doit.

L’homme n’a pas le droit d’être ingrat —

il y eut de belles choses.

Mais quelqu’un de parfaitement heureux —

tu ne l’as jamais vu.

Was dieses Erdenleben ist,

Was dieses Erdenleben ist,

das weiß man erst am Schluss.

Wenn man es bis zum Tode lebt,

dann ist es, weil man muss.

Undankbar darf der Mensch nicht sein —

es war doch manches schön.

Doch einen, der ganz glücklich war —

den hast du nie gesehn.
