Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. I-VI-LXXX

Man is like a tree in a river.

Man is like a tree in a river.

He stands there, and the waves lap against him;

He stands because he is what he should be —

Why should the play of things affect him?

It is true that God put him into time;

But not to fade away with things,

Rather to be a witness to the Highest Being —

And, while still in time, to stand in Eternity.

Il est debout, les vagues viennent à sa rencontre ;

Dieu l’a bien établi dans la temporalité ;

Er steht, die Wellen kommen ihm entgegen;

Was sollte ihn der Dinge Spiel bewegen?

Wohl hat ihn Gott ins Zeitliche gestellt;
