Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. I-VI-XI
Is it not strange that to beauty
Is it not strange that to beauty
There also belongs a gentle grief? The summer night
Brought the love song of the nightingales,
A song of longing, into my heart.
Tell me, O sweet night — tell me
Why longing must burn in our soul.
Because, banished to this earthly vale,
We cannot forget a distant
The bliss that we have known in God.
Sag mir, o süße Nacht — sag mir, warum
Muss denn in unsrer Seel das Sehnen brennen?
Weil wir, in dieses Erdental verbannt,
Ein fernes Leuchten nicht vergessen können —
Die Seligkeit, die wir in Gott gekannt.
