Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. VII-XII-XX

Nobility of speech is of the highest value,

Nobility of speech is of the highest value,

Because in it one honors God and one’s ancestors.

On account of language the Bedouins punished

Children — and their parents thanked them for it.

If a child wished to achieve position and honor,

He was obliged, in order to learn more noble language,

To live for a time with the sons of the desert.

If thou wouldst inherit the ancestors’ spirit and virtue

And transmit them faithfully to the next generation,

Then take care not to corrupt the language.
