Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. VII-XII-XXVI
Some people think in terms of black and white;
Some people think in terms of black and white;
For instance: if a potentate dies,
The eldest son decapitates the younger ones,
Lest a foolhardy brother — who can tell? —
Might be tempted by the pleasures of governance and fame;
Such atrocities are the sad price
Of world history and ethnology.
The opposition between black and white does have a
But not if one breaks the demands of Truth.
Certaines gens pensent en noir et blanc ;
Certaines gens pensent en noir et blanc ;
Par exemple : si un potentat est décédé,
Le fils aîné décapite ses frères cadets,
Afin qu’un audacieux — qui sait ?
Ne se livre au plaisir du règne et de la gloire ;
De telles atrocités sont le sombre prix
De l’Histoire et de l’ethnographie.
L’opposition noir et blanc a un sens — mais non
Si l’on met en pièces ce qu’exige le Vrai.
Gewisse Menschen denken schwarz und weiß;
Gewisse Menschen denken schwarz und weiß;
So etwa: ist ein Potentat gestorben,
So köpft der ältre Sohn die jüngern Söhne,
Auf dass nicht ein Verwegener — wer weiß?
Der Lust des Herrschens und des Ruhmes fröne;
Dergleichen Greuel sind der Weltgeschichte
Und auch der Völkerkunde düstrer Preis.
Der Gegensatz Schwarz-Weiß hat Sinn — doch nicht
Wenn man das, was das Wahre will, zerbricht.
