Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. I-VI-XXXVII

It would be wrong to think that music

It would be wrong to think that music

Is noble only if it is of a sacred kind;

Lyrical music also has its value,

Whether dramatic or delicately intimate.

After all, there is a spiritual value too

In the wild violin playing of gypsy bands;

And I would praise many noble folk songs —

Beauty is Truth, and it comes from Above.

Il serait faux de penser que la musique

Il serait faux de penser que la musique

Ne serait noble qu’en tant qu’art sacré ;

La musique lyrique aussi a sa valeur,

Qu’elle soit dramatique ou intimement délicate.

Une valeur spirituelle est finalement présente aussi

Dans le sauvage violon des bandes de tsiganes ;

Et je veux faire l’éloge de maint noble chant populaire —

La Beauté est Vérité, et elle vient d’En Haut.

Es wäre falsch, zu meinen, die Musik

Es wäre falsch, zu meinen, die Musik

Sei edel nur, wenn sie sakraler Art;

Auch lyrische Musik hat ihren Wert,

Sei sie dramatisch oder innig-zart.

Geistiger Wert ist schließlich auch vorhanden

Beim wilden Geigen der Zigeunerbanden;

Und manches edle Volkslied will ich loben —

Schönheit ist Wahrheit, und sie kommt von Oben.
