Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. I-VI-XLIII

When an intelligent man

When an intelligent man

speaks with a sharp voice,

It does not necessarily mean

that he is angry;

Logic and justice

can sharpen the tone of his speech —

The play of feelings

is immaterial.

Nobility and Truth

do not require

That one always behave

mildly;

Truth is hard —one and two are three;

This remains true

even without a smiling face.

There is a just anger

that admonishes fools —

No anger is as terrible

as the rebuke of brahmins.

Si un homme intelligent

Si un homme intelligent

parle d’une voix tranchante,

Cela ne signifie pas forcément

qu’il est courroucé ;

La logique et le bon droit

peuvent rendre acéré

Le son du discours — le jeu des sentiments

est indifférent.

Noblesse et Vérité —

elles n’exigent point

Qu’à tout moment

on se comporte avec douceur ;

La vérité est rigoureuse —<

un et deux font trois ;

C’est exact aussi

sans visage souriant.

Il y a la juste colère

pour admonester les sots —

Nulle colère n’est si redoutable

que la mise en garde des brahmanes.

Wenn ein gescheiter Mensch

Wenn ein gescheiter Mensch

mit scharfer Stimme redet,

Heißt dies nicht unbedingt

dass er erzürnet sei;

Logik und gutes Recht

können den Klang der Rede

Verschärfen — der Gefühle Spiel

ist einerlei.

Adel und Wahrheit —

sie erfordern nicht

Dass man zu jederzeit

sich mild benehme;

Hart ist die Wahrheit —

eins und zwei ist drei;

Es zählt auch

ohne lächelndes Gesicht.

Es gibt gerechten Zorn

die Toren zu ermahnen —

Kein Zorn ist furchtbar

wie die Warnung der Brahmanen.
