Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. VII-XII-CXLI

Sound character and depth of soul,

Sound character and depth of soul,

Honesty, fidelity, and love of wisdom — hence

Also some dreaminess; all in all:

The German is energetic, but also heavy.

The German character contains much that is good;

But one does not wish to praise one’s own house.

People are too unforgiving towards the Germans —

One only thinks of what they should have been.

Mainte bonne chose constitue la nature allemande ;

Ehrlichkeit, Treue, Weisheitsdrang — daher

Auch etwas Träumerei; alles in allem:

Tatkräftig ist der Deutsche, doch auch schwer.

Manch Gutes macht das deutsche Wesen aus;
