Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. VII-XII-XXXIII

Who art thou to criticize Protagoras?

Who art thou to criticize Protagoras?

Someone could have asked of Plato;

If Plato had then said: I am Plato,

People would have laughed — they did not want to recognize him.

Plato — and also Dante — knew who they were,

Just as generations after them did.

Qui es-tu pour blâmer Protagoras ?

Qui es-tu pour blâmer Protagoras ?

Quelqu’un aurait pu le demander à Platon ;

Si Platon avait dit alors : Je suis Platon,

Das hätte jemand Platon fragen können;

Hätt Platon dann gesagt: Ich bin der Platon,

Hätt man gelacht — man wollt ihn nicht erkennen.

Platon — auch Dante — wussten, wer sie waren,

So wie es wussten ihrer Nachwelt Scharen.
