World Wheel: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Volumes I-III-V

“Little Rose with the golden hair

“Little Rose with the golden hair

Loved so much to dance;

She danced till it was evening,

And the moon and the stars were watching.”

My father wrote these lines, and with them

There sang his noble violin;

He played, and his song was wine —

As the sun was sinking down.

The song floats in the evening air —

A longing for heavenly meadows.

If only the wounded heart could see

The Homeland already here below!

If only this song of longing

Could reveal its deepest core —

Beyond the heart’s drunken dream,

The song of the Wonderful!

« La petite rose à la chevelure dorée,

« La petite rose à la chevelure dorée,

Qui dansait si volontiers ;

Qui dansait jusqu’au soir venu,

Et lune et étoiles la voyaient. »

Ces lignes sont de mon père. Et puis

Son noble violon chantait ;

Il jouait, et son chant était vin —

Le soleil était sur son déclin.

Le chant plane dans l’air vespéral —

Nostalgie des pâturages du Ciel.

Ah, que ne puisse le cœur blessé

Déjà ici-bas contempler la patrie !

Ah, que ne puisse le chant nostalgique

Révéler sa nature la plus profonde —

Au-delà de l’ivre rêve du cœur,

Le chant du Merveilleux !

„Das Röslein mit dem goldnen Haar,

„Das Röslein mit dem goldnen Haar,

Das tanzte gar so gerne;

Das tanzte, bis es Abend war,

Und sahen’s Mond und Sterne.“

Dies schrieb mein Vater. Und dazu

Sang seine edle Geige;

Er spielte, und sein Lied war Wein —

Die Sonne ging zur Neige.

Das Lied schwebt in der Abendluft —

Sehnsucht nach Himmels Auen.

O könnte doch das wunde Herz

Schon hier die Heimat schauen!

O könnte doch das Sehnsuchtslied

Sein Tiefstes offenbaren —

Jenseits des Herzens trunknem Traum,

Den Sang des Wunderbaren!
