World Wheel: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Volumes I-III-CXV

In the war of religions, people did not know

In the war of religions, people did not know

How to fight and yet be generous with the enemy;

Neither side was wholly without justification:

For Luther, the sale of indulgences was evil;

Canisius wanted to abide in the House of Peter.

A pious, but nonetheless ambiguous struggle —

God will reward well the good intention.

On ne savait pas, dans la querelle des confessions,

On ne savait pas, dans la querelle des confessions,

Comment frapper tout en ménageant l’adversaire ;

Aucune des deux parties n’était tout à fait sans droit :

Pour Luther, le commerce des indulgences était mauvais ;

Canisius voulait habiter la maison de Pierre.

Une pieuse, mais ambiguë bataille —

Dieu récompensera largement la bonne intention.

Man wusste nicht, im Streit der Konfessionen,

Man wusste nicht, im Streit der Konfessionen,

Wie schlagen und den Gegner dennoch schonen;

Keiner von beiden war ganz ohne Recht:

Für Luther war der Ablasshandel schlecht;

Canisius wollt im Hause Petri wohnen.

Ein frommes, doch zweideutiges Gefecht —

Gott wird die gute Absicht schön belohnen.
