With Dante, poetic genius was the garment

Of his spirit, for which he lived and loved —

For which he produced his stream of poetry,

On a path often saddened by trials.

O voi, ch’ avete li ’ntelleti sani:

Recognize the Truth that is hidden in these words;

Sotto ’l velame de li versi strani —

And that instills in the heart solace and salvation.

Chez Dante, le génie poétique était le vêtement

De son esprit, pour lequel il vivait et aimait —

Pour lequel il inventa le flot de sa poésie

Sur un sentier troublé par maintes épreuves.

O voi che avete gl’intelletti sani :

Reconnaissez la Vérité qui se cache dans le verbe ;

Sotto il velame degli versi strani —

Et opère dans le cœur consolation et salut.

Für den er seiner Dichtung Strom erfand

Auf einem Pfad, den manche Prüfung trübte.
