Which one would like to turn to good account —

That seems to be waiting for a higher, God-centered goal;

God grant that ye wait not in vain.

Thus every man is there for something good —

The question is whether he himself can see it.

Que l’on voudrait mettre en valeur — qui pour ainsi dire

Attend un sens supérieur, conforme à Dieu ;

Plaise à Dieu que vous ne l’attendiez en vain.

Car tout un chacun est là pour un bien —

Reste à savoir s’il l’a vu lui-même.

Den man verwerten möcht — der gleichsam wartet

Auf einen höhern, gottgemäßen Sinn;

Geb Gott, dass ihr nicht nutzlos auf ihn harret.

So ist ein Jeder für ein Gutes da —

Es frägt sich nur, ob er es selber sah.
