World Wheel: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Volumes IV-VII-IV

Some say that the difference between good and evil,

Some say that the difference between good and evil,

Between beauty and ugliness, lies in arbitrary sentiment,

And not in the reality of outward things —

Good is only what is pleasing to man;

But one should know

That God made man a measure;

The human spirit bespeaks God’s intention —

It watches over the nature of things.

Homo sapiens: if man could not distinguish

Between worth and worthlessness, between great and small,

There would be no measure; someone in the universe

Had to be the primordial measure of God.

La différence entre bien et mal, beau

La différence entre bien et mal, beau

Et laid, est arbitrairement dans le sentiment,

Non dans la réalité des choses extérieures —

N’est bon que ce qui plaît à tel homme ;

C’est ce qu’on affirme. Mais on devrait savoir

Que Dieu a fait l’homme comme une mesure ;

Gut sei nur, was ein Mensch mit Lust gesehn;

So wird behauptet. Doch man sollte wissen,

Dass Gott den Menschen als ein Maß gemacht;

Dann wär kein Maßstab da; jemand im All,

Gewisslich, musste Gottes Urmaß sein.
