A living creature can abstain from a thing,
A living creature can abstain from a thing,
Or on the other hand it can accomplish it;
It can know contentment, and also passion;
It can be intelligent, and also sing of love.
Life offers us all these ways.
The way of ways is to strive towards God —
So let His Word resound in thy heart.
L’être vivant peut s’abstenir d’une chose,
L’être vivant peut s’abstenir d’une chose,
Et d’autre part il peut l’accomplir ;
Il connaît le contentement, de même la passion ;
Et il peut être intelligent, chanter l’amour aussi.
La vie nous offre toutes ces voies.
La Voie des voies est d’aspirer à Dieu —
Laisse donc Sa parole résonner en ton cœur.
Das Lebewesen kann sich einer Sache
Das Lebewesen kann sich einer Sache
Enthalten, kann sie andrerseits vollbringen;
Es kennt Zufriedenheit, auch Leidenschaft;
Und es kann klug sein, auch von Liebe singen.
All diese Wege bietet uns das Leben.
Der Weg der Wege ist, zu Gott zu streben —
So lass sein Wort in deinem Herz erklingen.
