World Wheel: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Volumes IV-VII-CVI

St. Louis, king of France, was playing ball with his princes.

St. Louis, king of France, was playing ball with his princes.

If thou hadst but one day to live,

One asked, what wouldst thou do?

I would give all my goods to the poor,

Was one reply. Another said:

I would enter a monastery. But thou, O King,

What wouldst thou do? — I would play ball.

The King, free from the bondage of illusion,

Stood at all times before His Lord.

A vivre, que ferais-tu ? demanda l’un d’eux ;

Noch Einen Tag, was tätest du? frug einer;

Ich würde all mein Gut den Armen geben,

War eine Antwort. Einer wollte fühlen:

Ich ging ins Kloster. Jedoch du, o König,

Was tätest du? — Ich würde Balle spielen.

Der König, frei von aller Torheit Banden,

Ist jederzeit vor seinem Herrn gestanden.
