What art thou? German — also somewhat French,

Then also Arab — and finally Indian,
By adoption into the circle of the tribe.
Thus did the goddess of destiny cast her
Thou knowest not how, for the Lord alone knows.
Also Mother India didst thou early
She blessed thee with the light of Wisdom.
Qu’es-tu ? Allemand — sans doute un peu français,
Qu’es-tu ? Allemand — sans doute un peu français,
Puis arabe aussi — finalement aussi indien
Par adoption dans le cercle de la tribu.
Ainsi la déesse du destin a-t-elle jeté ses lots —
Tu ignores comment, car seul le Seigneur le sait.
Mère Inde aussi, tu l’as tôt rencontrée —
Elle t’a béni de la Lumière de la Sagesse.
Was bist du? Deutscher — wohl etwas Franzose,

Dann auch Araber — schließlich auch Indianer
Durch Einverleibung in des Stammes Kreis.
So warf die Schicksalsgöttin ihre Lose —
Du weißt nicht wie, weil nur der Herr es weiß.
Auch Mutter Indien bist du früh begegnet —
Sie hat dich mit der Weisheit Licht gesegnet.
