Autumn Leaves & The Ring-Degeneration
An ancient royal castle is beautiful in itself,
An ancient royal castle is beautiful in itself,
But the interior pomp is dreadful —
There is nothing more extravagant in the world.
Praised be the nomad’s simple tent!
Richness has meaning when it flows toward beauty,
Not when it gives oppressive dreams a solid form.
Charity is the adornment of the rich man’s heart;
Resignation draws the poor man heavenward.
Poverty has value when it nourishes faith;
When it turns bitterly against the rich,
Its merit is gone.
Whether rich or not —
Ye stand before the Judgment of Eternity.
La charité : elle orne le cœur du riche ;
Pauvreté est valeur si elle nourrit la foi ;
Barmherzigkeit: sie ziert des Reichen Herz;
Ergebenheit zieht Armut himmelwärts.
Armut hat Wert, wenn sie den Glauben nährt;
Wenn sie sich bitter gegen Reiche kehrt,
Ist ihr Verdienst dahin.
Ob reich, ob nicht —
Ihr stehet vor des Ewigen Gericht.
