Partly, representation of what we have seen,
Or magic; partly, images of highest beings
Who rule our destiny from above —
Symbols, whose nearness conveys something
Of divine beings who come down to earth;
And conversely: which show us the way of grace
From our poverty up to Heaven.
At another level, images are simply there
The way a bunch of flowers decorates a home;
So may, in the cold and harsh winter,
A picture of spring gladden the soul.
Degeneration threatens much figurative art.
The Near East wants to renounce images;
Abraham’s world.

Entartung droht bei mancher Bilderkunst.
Auf Bilder will der Nahe Ost verzichten;
Abrahams Welt.
Gott weiß am besten, wie
Ein jedes Volk soll sein Gebet verrichten.
