One cannot be wholly without desires,
One cannot be wholly without desires,
Being human; for man must eat and drink
In order to live. Yet one can
Desire things without forgetting God —
Otherwise no blessing would come to the earthly plane.
One can desire something without greed —
One knows that what is earthly has its limits,
As we ourselves have. One should not crown
An earthly thing with worship and with laurels —
Beside the Creator, the world is slight.
Do not fix thy whole heart on what is but a part;
For: “Love the Lord thy God with all thy might.”

Neben dem Schöpfer ist die Welt gering.
Du sollst dein Herz nicht ganz ans Halbe heften;
Denn: „Liebe Gott mit allen deinen Kräften.“
