That thine efforts do not disrespect the literal meaning;

Certainly thy mind may plumb the depths —

But it must not go beyond God’s intention.

Exegesis, when dragged by the forelock,

Somehow contorts Wisdom’s meaning.

Que ton effort ne se moque de la littéralité du texte ;

Certes, ton esprit peut creuser en profondeur —

Il n’a le droit d’avoir plus que l’intention de Dieu.

L’exégèse, comme tirée par les cheveux,

A en quelque sorte déformé le sens de la Sagesse.

Dass dein Bemühn den Wortlaut nicht verlacht;

Gewiss, dein Geist darf in die Tiefe graben —

Er darf nicht mehr als Gottes Absicht haben.

Auslegung, wie am Haarschopf hergezogen,

Hat irgendwie der Weisheit Sinn verbogen.
