Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. I-VI-CVI

One should never believe in what is past —

One should never believe in what is past —

So said a philosopher from the land of the Ganges.

Truth must be discovered for oneself —

So turn the screws of idle thought.

Truth, says this man, is the creation of one’s own mind;

What others say is but an empty seeming;

All this — he says — you have to ponder thoroughly.

That he should tell this to others is incomprehensible.

On ne devrait jamais croire au passé —

On ne devrait jamais croire au passé —

Estime un philosophe au pays du Gange ;

On devrait trouver la Vérité par soi-même —

Ainsi tournent les vis de la vaine pensée.

La Vérité : puisée dans sa propre raison ;

Ce que disent d’autres ne serait que creuse apparence ;

A cela — prêche cet homme — réfléchissez mûrement.

Qu’il le dise à d’autres est inintelligible.

Man solle niemals an Vergangnes glauben —

Man solle niemals an Vergangnes glauben —

So wähnt ein Philosoph im Gangeslande;

Die Wahrheit müsse selbstgefunden sein —

So drehen sich des eitlen Denkens Schrauben.

Wahrheit: geschöpft aus eigenem Verstande;

Was andre sagen, sei nur hohler Schein;

Dies — predigt jener Mann — bedenkt euch reiflich.

Dass er es andern sagt, ist unbegreiflich.
