False philosophers, insolent

And vainglorious. But in all the Greek world

It was Plato who was chosen for Wisdom.

Before him was Pythagoras, mysterious, deep —

The Spirit bloweth where it listeth.

One should call the inventors of false doctrines

Not philosophers, but misosophers —

Those who follow their ambition and pride,

And stubbornly keep to their mad ideas.

Plato and Aristotle, and later Plotinus:

They radiate a thousand years and more.

What they wished, and in part achieved,

Was that humanity should rally round the Truth.

De faux philosophes, remplis d’impudence

Et de vanité. Mais dans le monde hellénique

Platon fut élu pour la Sagesse ;

Auparavant Pythagore, très profond et mystérieux —

Le vent de l’Esprit souffle où il veut.

Non des philosophes, mais des misosophes

Doit-on appeler les inventeurs de fausses doctrines —

Eux qui suivent leur ambition, leur orgueil

Et s’acharnent dans leurs folles idées.

Platon et Aristote et plus tard

Plotin : ils rayonnèrent mille ans

Et plus. Ce qu’ils voulurent et firent en partie :

Que l’humanité se rallie à la Vérité.

Und eitel. Doch im ganzen Griechentum

Zur Weisheit wurde Plato auserkoren;

Zuvor Pythagoras, gar tief und still —

Der Wind des Geistes wehet, wo er will.

Nicht Philosophen, sondern Misosophen

Sollt man Erfinder falscher Lehren heißen —

Die ihrem Ehrgeiz, ihrem Hochmut folgen

Und sich in ihre Wahnidee verbeißen.

Plato und Aristoteles und später

Plotin: sie überstrahlen tausend Jahre

Und mehr. Was sie gewollt, und teils getan:

Dass sich die Menschheit um die Wahrheit schare.
