A symbol may be arbitrary, artificially conceived;

Or else: its inner meaning one may see —

Its message is what strikes the eye.

In the first case, the symbol is a writing;

In the second, it is not a mere outward sign,

But something of that which

It signifies:

It can reach the heart.

Dans le premier cas, le symbole est graphisme ;

Dans le second, il n’est pas simple signe mental,

Mais il est quelque chose de ce qu’il

Doit signifier :

Il peut atteindre le cœur.

Willkürlich sein, ist künstlich hergestellt;

Oder: man sieht ihm die Bedeutung an —

Sein Sinn ist das, was in die Augen fällt.

Im ersten Falle ist das Sinnbild Schrift;

Im zweiten ist es nicht bloß Sinneszeichen,

Sondern es ist etwas von dem, was es

Bedeuten soll:

Es kann das Herz erreichen.
