Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. I-VI-CI
For Dante, all wise heathens
For Dante, all wise heathens
Were indeed in hell, but in a cool place;
They had not the Christian view of God,
But they rested blissfully before the gate of the Most High.
Here the poet saw Aristotle —
His master — Plato and Socrates;
Saladin, the Moslem, was also in this cool brightness,
And not in the heat of hell.
It was a place, said Dante: di fresca verdura;
Genti v’eran con occhi tardi e gravi,
Di grande authorità ne’ lor sembianti:
Parlavan rado, e con voci soavi.
Pour Dante tous les sages païens étaient
Pour Dante tous les sages païens étaient
Bien en Enfer, mais à un endroit frais ;
Ils n’avaient pas la vision de Dieu des chrétiens,
Mais reposaient heureux devant la porte du Très-Haut.
C’est là que le poète vit Aristote —
Son maître — de même Platon et Socrate ;
Saladin était aussi dans la fraîche lumière,
Lui le musulman, non dans le brasier de l’Enfer.
Un endroit, dit Dante : di fresca verdura ;
Genti v’eran con occhi tardi e gravi,
Di grande autorità ne’ lor sembianti :
Parlavan rado, e con voci soavi.
Für Dante waren alle weisen Heiden
Für Dante waren alle weisen Heiden
Wohl in der Hölle, doch an kühlem Orte;
Sie hatten nicht der Christen Gottesschau,
Doch ruhten glücklich vor des Höchsten Pforte.
Hier sah der Dichter Aristoteles —
Sein Meister — Plato auch und Sokrates;
Auch Saladin war in der kühlen Helle,
Er der Moslem, nicht in der Glut der Hölle.
Ein Ort, sagt Dante: di fresca verdura;
Genti v’eran con occhi tardi e gravi,
Di grande autorità ne’ lor sembianti:
Parlavan rado, e con voci soavi.
