It is taught that there is Heaven or hell
It is taught that there is Heaven or hell
For all eternity. Only one can be right:
The Real is divine, it is the Sovereign Good —
Bliss can be eternal, but not so torment.
Why then is truth only partially taught?
The Logos knows that no one suffers willingly;
The holy threat works, for the sinner
Hell is true because it drives the soul to Heaven.
Perhaps man is intelligent, more or less;
Not that his thinking towers over
No man is the inventor of his mind.
In a word: the lords of the earth are only big children.

Personne n’est l’inventeur de son propre esprit.
En un mot : les seigneurs de la terre sont de grands enfants.

Warum denn wird die Wahrheit halb gelehrt?
Der Logos weiß: kein Mensch ist gern geplagt;
Die heilge Drohung wirkt, es flieht der Sünder —
Die Höll ist wahr, weil sie zum Himmel jagt.
Mag sein, der Mensch ist klug, mehr oder minder;
Nicht, dass sein Denken alles
Niemand ist seines eignen Geists Erfinder.
Ein Wort: der Erde Herrn sind große Kinder.
