Can be a meaningful encounter;
Thus, in my childhood’s fairy-tale days,
The dark green Rhine was a friend.
Later: the big lake near the Alps
Where I lived for so many years —
With the blissfulness of its surface,
It recompensed my much-tormented heart.
Then Valais with its snowcapped mountains,
Which tower timelessly into the sky;
The kingly Matterhorn — the valleys,
Wearing carpets of wild flowers.
Then the wild forests in the Far West,
Once the Indian’s sacred land.
The earliest and latest in one’s life
Are near — they take each other’s hand.

Et puis la forêt sauvage dans le lointain Ouest,
Jadis pays sacré des Indiens.
Les tout débuts et le plus tardif dans la vie
Sont proches — ils se tendent la main.

Ein Freund der dunkelgrüne Rhein.
Später: der große See beim Alpenland,
Wo ich so manches Jahr gewohnt —
Er hat mit seiner Fläche Seligkeit
Mein vielgeplagtes Herz belohnt.
Das Wallis mit den schneebedeckten Bergen,
Die zeitlos in den Himmel ragen;
Das königliche Matterhorn — die Täler,
Die Teppiche von Blumen tragen.
Und dann der wilde Wald im fernen Westen,
Einst der Indianer heilig Land.
Das Frühste und das Späteste im Leben
Sind nah — sie reichen sich die Hand.
