Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. VII-XII-CXXXIX

The voice of man is in itself a prayer;

The voice of man is in itself a prayer;

Yet even animals do not wish to be without prayer.

God gives them a spark of piety —

Animals pray without knowing it.

So animals’ sounds are not mere cries —

God put something of Himself into them;

The creatures pray in the way they must.

Man’s call to God seeks to reveal

What all voices were before creation.

La voix de l’homme est en soi une prière ;

La voix de l’homme est en soi une prière ;

Dieu y plaça quelque chose de Lui-même ;

Des Menschen Stimme ist, an sich, Gebet;

Des Menschen Stimme ist, an sich, Gebet;

Gott tut in ihn etwas von Sich hinein;

Die Wesen beten, wie sie beten müssen.

Des Menschen Ruf zu Gott will offenbaren

Was alle Stimmen vor der Schöpfung waren.
