Serenitas — wise calmness of soul;

Serenitas — wise calmness of soul;

An undertone of noble longing

May also accompany it—for the soul feels

The breath of Paradise, though all too far away.

The soul is free, but under the spell of time —

Nevertheless: does not Eternity,

Heaven’s radiance, touch thee? Thy heart may experience it,

When God so wills, in answer to thy striving.

Sérénité — la sage quiétude de l’âme ;

Un grain de noble nostalgie peut aussi

L’accompagner — car l’âme sent,

Mais par trop loin, le souffle du Paradis.

L’âme est libre, mais sous l’emprise du temps —

Toutefois : l’Eternité, le rayon du Ciel

Ne te touchent-ils pas ? Ton cœur peut le vivre

Quand Dieu le veut, en réponse à ton aspiration.

Ein Unterton von edler Sehnsucht auch

Mag sie begleiten — denn die Seele fühlt,

Doch allzufern, des Paradieses Hauch.

Frei ist die Seel, jedoch im Bann der Zeit —

Trotzdem: berührt dich nicht die Ewigkeit,

Des Himmels Strahl? Dein Herz darf sie erleben

Wann Gott es will, als Antwort auf dein Streben.
