Frithjof Schuon created this painting in 1967, and it is reproduced in the book The Feathered Sun (World Wisdom, 1990) on page 37. The image of the sacred Thunderbird painted on the shield is particularly vivid. Three eagle feathers are also attached to the shield. Sacred symbols adorn the clothing of the warriors, their implements, and their horses. Red is a sacred color to the Plains Indians. Buffalo skulls, such as the one at the lower right, were used in prayers and rituals, symbolizing and invoking the “solar” power of the buffalo, among other things.
