That give delight to all wise hearts —

And whose images Nature shows to us.

Here is the safety of the mountain cave:

Its deep, warm, and motherly inwardness;

There is the total freedom of the summit:

With the pure air of snow-clad peaks.

Such is the soul, standing before God:

Both root and crown —

Yet one sole prayer.

Qui réjouissent le cœur de tout homme sage —

Et dont la nature nous offre des images :

Voici la sécurité d’une caverne de montagne,

L’intérieur profond, chaud, maternel ;

Voilà l’indépendance du sommet

Et son air pur sur les crêtes couvertes de neige.

Telle est l’âme qui se tient devant Dieu :

Racine et couronne —

Mais Une seule prière.

Die jedes weise Menschenherz erfreuen —

Und deren Bilder die Natur uns zeigt:

Da ist der Bergeshöhle Sicherheit,

Das tiefe, warme, mütterliche Innen;

Dort ist des Gipfels Unabhängigkeit

Mit reiner Luft auf schneebedeckten Zinnen.

So ist die Seel, die vor der Gottheit steht:

Wurzel und Krone —

Doch nur Ein Gebet.
