Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. I-VI-LII

If one wants to assess the rebelliousness of the people,

If one wants to assess the rebelliousness of the people,

One should not forget the stupidity of the nobles:

Tradition is fine and good —

But decadence provokes the people’s wrath.

One sees it in the incredible costumes

That made the nobles’ feasts ridiculous —

Who dominated himself for the sake of the people?

And unfortunately, the Church gave its blessing to all this.

Wenn man des Volkes Aufruhr will ermessen,

Wenn man des Volkes Aufruhr will ermessen,

Darf man des Adels Torheit nicht vergessen:

Die Überlieferung ist schön und gut —

Doch die Entartung weckt des Volkes Wut.

Man sieht es an den unerhörten Trachten,

Die lächerlich des Adels Feste machten —

Wer schon beherrschte sich des Volkes wegen?

Die Kirche, leider, schenkte ihren Segen.
