Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. I-VI-XCIV
The enemy of a friend cannot be a friend;
The enemy of a friend cannot be a friend;
But the enemy of an enemy can be so.
So note well who is thy friend,
And who is the enemy of thy friend — or remain alone.
One’s fundamental attitude must be: goodwill towards all;
Then comes discernment between good and evil,
But without passion; for the one who can combine
The world with God, is just.
L’ennemi de l’ami ne peut être un ami ;
L’ennemi de l’ami ne peut être un ami ;
Mais l’ennemi de l’ennemi peut l’être ;
Ainsi prends garde à qui est ton ami, et l’ennemi
De l’ami — sinon reste seul.
La disposition fondamentale : bienveillance envers tous ;
Puis discernement entre bien et mal,
Mais sans passion ; car seul est équitable
Celui qui sait rattacher le monde à Dieu.
Der Feind des Freundes kann nicht sein ein Freund;
Der Feind des Freundes kann nicht sein ein Freund;
Jedoch der Feind des Feindes kann es sein;
So achte wer dein Freund ist, wer der Feind
Des Freundes — oder bleib allein.
Die Grundstimmung: Wohlwollen gegen alle;
Dann Unterscheidung zwischen Gut und Schlecht,
Doch ohne Leidenschaft; denn wer die Welt
Mit Gott verbinden kann, der ist gerecht.
